One might read this article and think that Hunter Merryman singlehandedly carried the Panthers to victory against #3 ranked Buckley with his game-high 20 points. However, being a part of that game, I know that this is not necessarily the case. This is a mistake sports media makes in almost every story and every bit of coverage they provide. I’m only using this game and article as an example because I know Hunter is a great all-around player. Points, generally considered the most glorious stat, almost always get the most attention in the media.
The issue here is that stats don’t cover everything. No solid stat exists to show a player’s efficiency on defense, nor has anyone invented a stat for things like leadership or hustle, which are key elements to any sports game. Yes, one person might have made the basket, but don’t forget about the person who passed him the ball. Yes, the quarterback might have thrown a touchdown pass, but there’s the lineman who worked his hardest for 5 seconds to allow him to do so. The forward might have scored the goal, but what about the midfielder who delivered a perfect ball?
My question is this: Who should get the credit – the person who does the most glorious job or the person who does the best?
